This month, Mayor Tony Francis joined a group of about 60 VIPs to officially open a new industry at Queenscliff Harbour, Savage Panda Snowboards.
Having conducted about 2 years of R&D into what’s missing in the snowboarding industry, local Queenscliff residents Simon Thorne and Kate Engler have stepped up to fill this gap and opened a snowboard building factory right here in Queenscliff.
But this isn’t just any snowboard factory churning out mass production boards – no, the niche industry Kate and Simon are filling is fully custom made snowboards.
The process of what ‘fully custom boards’means is that each and every board is built to match exactly what the snowboarder wants – from the core of the board (or as Kate explained at the opening, the ‘brain’ of the board), all the way through to materials, shape, look and feel – the whole board is tailored and personalised for every single snowboarder.
With specialised equipment imported from the US and 15 boards already underway, this new venture is gaining traction quickly with snowboarders who are looking for something more personalised than they can get in the average snowboard shop, and perhaps more importantly for the Mayor and the Harbour, it means an expansion of industry in the Borough that will mean more jobs for locals as they grow.
